Woman Aspirant For Northern Maori Seat
KAIKOHE, This Day. Mrs Rehutai Maihi Gilbcrd. of Kaikoho. who has agreed to her name being forwarded for consideration by the Labour Party for the Northern Maori seat, is well known throughout the north for her welfare work among the Maori people. She is a direct, descendant of Eru Paiuone, the paramount Ngapuhi chief. Mrs Gilberd is editress of New Zealand’s only Maori newspaper “Aotearoa,” is president of the Kaikohc Maori Women's Institute, a member of the Kaikohe District High School Committee and also assists in patriotic work. Mrs Gilberd states that at a recent meeting of the newly formed Labour committee, it was decided to introduce postal ballots into Maori politics.
