Aid For Returned Men
“Has any policy been laid down concerning the allowance that may be made to returned servicemen from the welfare fund?” This was asked by Mrs. R. Gibson (Dargavillej at yesterday's meeting of the Northland Zone Committee of the Patriotic Council. The chairman (Mr. W. Jones) said it is largely a question of merit. The welfare committee was doing its best to see that our gilts have merit behind them. It was not a good thing to give cash, an order being much preferable. It was the women and children "who must be considered. We were endeavouring to get three local men who would undertake to investigate all applications for assistance, and on their recommendation assistance would be granted. The president of the R.S.A. (Mr. R. A. Rogers) said his association had received numerous applications. It was their practice to issue orders not exceeding £5."
