Adjourned Cases Before Appeal Board

Cases previously adjourned were reviewed by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Whangarei today. The board comprises Messrs. W. Jones (chairman), N. Horrobin, A. J. Magee and R. Gray (secretary). A bus-driver, William J. Forshaw, was appealed for by the Northern Motor Bus Co., Ltd., Mr. A. Wilkinson stating that the greatest difficulty was being experienced in securing drivers, but replacements were made wherever possible. Sine die adjournment was granted, Forshaw being transferred to the Home Guard. Roy V. Davidson, baker and storekeeper, Whangarei (Mr. D. Ross), appealed for himself and also for William I. D. Hawkins, baker, stating that the two of them were fully occupied and working long hours, no bakers being available for employment. He could not see that the installation of machinery would help the position. Both appeals were adjourned sine die. Farming Operations An appeal for Walter W. Donaldson, farmer, of Whareora, was made by his mother, Mrs. L. E. Donaldson (Mr. D. J. Thomson). Donaldson said he was farming 1000 acres and production from 45 cows last season had l?een 93001b5. butterfat. In addition he was running sheep and had a tractor and baling plant with which he worked in the district. The appeal was supported by the Whangarei Primary Production Council, Mr. H. V/. James stating 1 that Donaldson had given invaluable assistance to district farmers. Adjournment sine die was granted, Donaldson being transferred to the Home Guard. ~ Messrs. H. and J. C. McDonald (Mr. Thomson), both serving overseas, appealed for William G. Dyke, sharemilker, of Hikurangi, who said that last season 56 cows had nroduced ll,Boolbs. butterfat. The appeal'was adjourned sine die, Dyke being transferred to the Home Guard. Farming 76V2 acres at One Tree Point, Phillip E. O. Farnham (Ml'. H. C. Rishworth) said he was also caring for the property of one of two brothers overseas. Production last year from 40 cows had been 60001bs. butterfat, a reduction on the previous season of lOOOlbs., due to the dry season. Mr. A. Clarke appealed for David Gorrie, sharemilker, of Whareora, stating that production last season had been 20,0001b5. butterfat from 86 cows, while pig-meat had also been taken off the property. Adjournment sine die was granted, Gorrie being transferred to the Home Guard. In his appeal, Alwyn Graham, farmer, of Mania (Mr. Thomson), said that the dry weather last season had reduced his production from 55 cows to 90001bs. butterfat, but he allowed lOOOlbs. for feeding his calves, all of which he raised. His cream had to be sledged out and his two sisters on the farm would not be able to manage in his absence. The appeal was supported by the Whangarei Primary Production Council, Mr. James stating that the farm was most difficult to manage. The appeal was adjourned sine die, Graham being transferred to the Home Guard.

A brother of the previous appellant. William Graham (Mr. Thomson), said he was farming at Kaitea. Production last season had been affected, decreasing to 53001b5. from 34 cows. Adjournment sine die was granted, Graham being transferred to the Home Guard. Two brothers, Albert W. Harrison and Cyril A. Harrison (Mr. Ross), said they were farming 800 acres at Taipuha. Both were single and their father was an invalid. Production last season, which had been dry, had been 15,5001b5. butterfat from 90 cows. Both were required on the farm, which could not be managed by one, and labour was difficult to obtain owing to its isolation. The appeal of A. W. Harrison was adjourned sine die and he was transferred to the Home Guard, while that of C. A. Harrison was dismissed, subject to Harrison not being called before September 1. Nathan C. Hart, farmer, of Matarau, said that production last season from 32 cows had been 72001b5. butterfat. Sine die adjournment was granted, Hart being transferred to the Home Guard. Mr. H. Harvey, farmer, of Ruakaka, appealed for his son, Valentine Harvey, who said that last season production had been 10,6001b5. from 72 cows. The appeal was adjourned sine die, Harvey being transferred to the Home Guard. Earlier Cases Adjourned for the hearing of further evidence, the appeal of Ronald J. Hailes, farmer, of Hikurangi (Mr. Thomson), again came before the board. Evidence regarding the necessity for a new milking shed to be built was given by a Government inspector, who said the present shed had been condemned and a new one could be built for £220. The appeal was adjourned sine die, Hailes to be transferred to the Home Guard, conditional on Hailes continuing to carry on his dairying operations on his Opuawhanga property with the same number of cows as before. Hugh F. R. Buchanan, farmer, of Ruatangata, said he was farming 400 acres and production last season had been 40001bs. butterfat from 30 cows, a reduction caused by the dry season. Sine die adjournment was granted. Buchanan being transferred to the Home Guard. In an appeal for Gregory W. Burke, Mr. M. Burke, farmer, of Mareretu, said that on his farm of 300 acres he was running, in addition to other stock, 60 cows from which production last yearhad been 80001bs. butterfat, a decrease due to dry weather. His son was creamcarrying and doing other carrying work, and although replacements had been tried they had not been satisfactory. Decision was reserved. Pedigree Production

Mr. G. E. Child, farmer, of Maungakaramea (Mr. Lamb), appealing for George C. E. Child, said that two properties, one of 780 acres and 189 acres, were involved and were carrying 600 sheep, 200 cattle and 36 pedigree cows, butterfat production last season being 77C01bs. Testing shewed an average of 4001bs. per cow, but whole milk was fed to the calves. Decision was reserved. On his own behalf, Gilbert L. Chitty, farmer, of Taipuha. said he was farming 270 acres which were carrying 70 cattle and 50 sheep. This season 41 cows had produced just under 70001bs. butterfat and he was also running pigs. Adjournment sine die was granted, Chitty being transferred to the Home Guard. Mrs. M. F. Clarke appealed for her son, Basil A. M. Clarke, farmer, of Maunu, who said that last season production from 33 cows had been 60001bs. butterfat from one farm and on another property at Whatitiri where he was breeding and fattening cattle. The appeal was adjourned sine die, Clarke being transferred to the Home Guard. Appealing for Ralnh L. Courtney, farmer, of Whatitiri, Mrs. I. Courtney (Mr. Lamb) said the property was of 450 acres and last season 30 cows had produced 60G01bs. butterfat. Sine die adjournment was granted, Courtney being transferred to the Home Guard. More Farming Appeals Giving evidence in his appeal, Allen Trevor Cullen, farmer, of Waikiekie (Mr. Thomson), said that last season production from 65 cows had been 15,5001b5. butterfat, while he had sent away 47001b5. of pig-meat, reductions being due to the dry season.' Adjournment sine die was granted, Cullen being transferred to the Home Guard. Farming 196 acres at Maunu, Charles S. Curtis (Mr. Ross) said that last season 66 cows had been milked for a production of 15,20C1b5. butterfat. The appeal was adjourned sine die, Curtis being transferred to the Home Guard. The appeal of Robert E. Dawson, farmer, of Waikiekie, was supported by his father, Mr. R. Dawson. Dawson said he was farming 80 acres in partnership with a brother now overseas and last season 20 cows had produced 27001b5. butterfat. He also worked outside manure sowing. His father was living on the farm. Mr. J. R. Babe gave evidence on behalf of Waikiekie people, stating that Dawson was the only man left in the district able to give casual labour and this year had sown 418 tons of manure. The appeal was dismissed subject to Dawson not being called before October 1. , Raymond Dinsdale, mechanic, of Hikurangi (Mr. Ross), said he was conducting a garage and was working long hours repairing vehicles for essential work and doing farm and general repair wprk. Adjournment sine die was granted, Dinsdale being transferred to the Home Guard. In the appeal of Messrs. James and Whimp, motor body builders, for Artnur H. Aubrey, apprentice, decision in which was reserved for inqury, Mr. H. W. James said that only time was required. The appeal was dismissed conditional on Aubrey not being called before October 1.
