Big Surplus In Radio Fund
Evidence that the rdaio licence fee of 25/- a year produces more than double the cost of conducting the National Broadcasting Service is given by the annual report of the service for 1942-43. The revenue for the year amounted to £605,408, of which £549,423 was from licence fees and £10,331 from technical services supplied at cost to the Commerical Broadcasting Service. The year’s expenditure was £231,047, leaving a surplus of £374,361. Programmes absorbed £89,345, operation of stations £47,044, and administration £37,271. For depreciation £26,391 was allowed, and £2296 was spent on the broadcasting unit with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas. The balance of fixed assets over liabilities at the end of the year was £221,357, compared with £215,881 at the beginning, and £31,867 was spent on capital improvements A further £380,000 was invested during the year to provide for future development and overtake arrears of development in the war period. The total invested for this purpose is now £1,180,000.
