Coincidences In The Desert
Examining the kit of a German soldier, which he had picked up in the Western Desert, Sergt.Major N. V. Boyd, of Whangarei, ran into a chain of amazing coincidences. In the German’s haversack were found three letters addressed to Sergt.-Major Boyd’s cousin, L/C pi. Gordon Murdoch, who had been killed in action in the battle for Tobruk two days earJAsr. To cap the coincidence, two of the letters had been written by cousins of Sergt.-Major Boyd— Miss A. McLennan (Tahcre) and Miss A. Murdoch (Wheki Valley). The third letter was from Mr. Mconey, of Whatitiri, the district from which L/Cpl. Mooney enlisted to go overseas with the First Echelon. Writing to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Boyd, Mamm Road, Whangarei, Sergt.-Major Boyd says he is returning the letters retrieved in such unlikely fashion, to their writers.
