Express Dissatisfaction With Army Reading
(Special)
KAITAIA, This Day.
Discussion on various letters from the Pqblic Works Department to the Mangonui County Council yesterday on matters relating to roads to be repaired from the War Expenses Account, and, in particular, the deviation made necessary by the taking over of portion of the main highway north from Awanui, indicated that councillors felt strongly about the condition of the alternative route. “The new route was to have been put in proper order before it was handed over, but it is already in need of urgent repair,” stated Cr. Steed. Councillors were unanimous in their opinion that the new deviation should be brought up to the standard of a main highway. A great deal of money had been spent on the original road and they felt that they were asking only just compensation in expecting the deviation to be of a like standard, especially as the ipajor amount of traffic over it was military traffic. The councillors considered that the amount suggested by the P.W.D. as extra maintenance money came nowhere near the estimates of the county foreman, and that the council could not. agree to begin reconstruction work until the full amount was available.
In the meantime, at the urgent request of the army, through the Public Works Department, repairs are being carried out on Spain’s Road and the WaipapakauriWest Coast road, the council to be reimbursed for these repairs.
