Engineers’ Dance At Kaikohe
KAIKOHE. This Day
A picturesque scene was presented at a military camp hear Kaikohe when the Engineers held their Christmas and Anniversary ball on Wednesday night. Brightly lit; by numerous lanterns in a variety of colours, the trees surrounding the dance hall made a veritable fairyland, while even the moon had a rival in the form of an electric light shining through a lin cut in the shape of a lace which had been attached to a tall tree in the. background. Rose-covered arbours abounded among the trees, each nikauenclosed nook bearing an appropriate sign, Inside, a very plain mess hut had been completely transformed with nikau decorations and garlands of roses, the orchestra platform being partitioned off in one corner. As a result of long hours of practice a high standard of'playing was attained by the 11-piece swing orchestra which was composed of Lieut. Lane, Sgt. Grace, Sgt. Lane, Cpl. Currcen, Cpl. Pou, Cpl. Woodbridge, Cpi. Waipouri, Spr. Rameka. Spr. Te Awa, Spr, Penewi, and Dvr. Ludlow. while Lieut. Rountree capably fulfilled the duties of M.C. A Monte Carlo was won by Miss M. Hansen and Spr. Searetf. A .novelty feature during the evening’s entertainment was the performance of gymnastieal feats by Hire* “Gladiators” of tile Engineers.
Under the supervision of Q.M.S. Juby, supper had been prepared in an adjoining mess hut. All cooking ancl preparation had been done in the camp, the crayfish and oysters provided disappearing in record time.
A complete success in every way, the Engineers could feel justifiably proud of their dance which was brought to a conclusion at 3 a.m. with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
