Epidemic Causes Postponement Of Senior Rugby Game

Restrictions imposed as a result of further cases of meningitis in the North again had an effect on Whangarei football on Saturday. The principal attraction at Rugby Park was the scheduled meeting of Army and Old Boys, but as leave to Territorials had been cancelled the match was postponed. Another game which had to be postponed for the same reason was that between Central and United juniors at Hukerenui. Alterations made in the programme, however, secured the assurance of good football for the spectators at the park, the School-Hikurangi junior game transferred to the main ground providing a good exhibition. SCHOOL - HEKURANGI DIVIDE HONOURS Honours were even with six points each at the call of time. Hikurangi had had much the better exchanges of the second half, good efforts and openings, however, being spoiled by infringements. Immediately after the kick-off, Lazlett made an opening for a School attack and transferred to Rasmussen, who sent the ball back with an in-field pass for Lazlett to score. Hikurangi came back strongly, but the defence was strong and infringements spoiled chances. Both teams were throwing the ball about in mid-field play which occupied a long spell with little advantage to either side. The game was fast and even, Kamo forwards i proving better than their opponents, but Old Boys’ backs saved the day for their team.

HORA HORA BEATS SCHOOL THIRDS In the curtain-raiser at Rugby Park, School and Hora Hora third grade teams also gave a good exhibition. Scores were even at eight points all until the later stages. Guest and Matthews having scored tries, Broomfield converting one for School, while Kitt had scored a try for Taylor to convert as well as kick a penalty. Taylor then added to his individual and team total by raising the flags with another penaty and the Hora Hora half-back. McDonald, sent Povey across for another try, which Taylor could not convert from an easy position. School pressed again and Robison was successful with a penalty kick, making the score Hora Hora 14, School 11. With a lead of six points in the competition, Hora Hora lias a mortgage on the championship. HIKURANGI FOURTHS DEFEAT CENTRAL By the narrow margin of three points, a irv seemed by Tweedie, the Hikurangi fourths defeated Cemral when these two teams played at Hikurangi. Central did not open its account. Hikurangi were fust about the three points better team, being slightly heavier than Central. School Too Strong for Maunu By r.ight points to * three, School A fourth graders defeated Maunu at Rugby Park. For School, Posa and Whelan score dtries, Nisbet converting one, while tor Maunu Thorpe scored a fry. MAUNU WINS RUNAWAY GAME IN FIFTH GRADE Maunu swamped School C in the fifth grade game played at Rugby Park,'scoring a runaway victory by 20 points to nil.
