Mr. William Deeming, 60 Years In North

OBITUARY

Associated with the North for the past 60 years, Mr. William Deeming died at his home in Whangarei on Sunday at the age of 76. Mr. Deeming was born in Glasgow, and came to New Zealand with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Deeming, arriving in 1874 in Auckland, where the family lived for a short time before moving to the Bay of Islands.

After leaving school, Mr. Deeming was engaged in mining at Kawakawa, and later moved to Hikurangi, where he followed a similar occupation until 1918, when he moved to Maungakaramea, where he took up farming. Later he was employed by the Public Works Department for a number of years, working at Tauraroa and Kaikohe. He retired about five years ago to live in Whangarei. Mr. Deeming, who was a foundation member of the Hikurangi Masonic Lodge, was married twice. He is survived by his second wife, two daughters of the first marriage, Mrs. P. Bayliss (Auckland) and Mrs. A. Hunt (Otago), and two sons, Pte. L. Deeming (Egypt) and Mr. R. Deeming (Maungakaramea); and four daughters, Mrs. C. Edge (Whangarei), Mrs. W. Irwin (Invercargill), and Misses R. and E. Deeming (Whangarei), of the second marriage There are 20 grandchildren. Mr. J. S. Deeming (Opua) is a brother. The funeral took place at the Maunu Cemetery yesterday.
