Uruguayan Help To Britain Urged
(Received 12.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, December 25.
Many Uruguayans are urging their Government to abandon neutrality and adopt a policy of non-belliger-ency in favour of Britain, says the “New York Times.” ' They suggest that the port of Montevideo should be opened for unrestricted use by the South Atlantic Squadron of the British Fleet. Leading Uruguayan newspapers point out that the German pocket battleship Graf Spee was destroying commerce, while the British armed merchant cruiser Carnarvon Castle was protecting it. . ' Yet, under Uruguayan observance of neutrality, the Carnarvon Castle was given the same treatment as the Graf Spee, which was ridiculous.
Threat.—According to a Tokio message a Japanese spokesman said: “We fully understand the German attitude to American assistance for Britain. If such American acts are persistently pursued, there is danger of their leading to actual war between Germany and the United State 3.”
