Whangarei Bowling Club In Sound Financial Position
The season’s operations of the Whangarei Bowling Club (Inc.) shows a credit balance of £7O 18/6 on the season closed on May 4, v 1940. This was after the repayment of a £SO debenture, the purchase of a water supply plant which makes an asset worth £SO, and the erection of a new fence besides the acquisition of more up-to-date tools and plant for the upkeep of the greens. For the first time the balance sheet appears without showing interest on overdraft. “This I venture to submit is due mainly to the wonderful response at our tournaments and the generous donations,” stated the president (Mr. G. Wilding) in his annual report. Greens in Good Order The greens, Mr. Wilding said, were favourably commented upon during the season. It was anticipated that with reasonable care and attention the coming season would see the same excellent condition of the playing areas. Membership of the club stood at 108 —B9 active, 11 honorary, two country and six life members. Mr. Wilding anticipated that the membership would be maintained. War Complex. “Although the war complex will certainly’have a marked effect on our membership, every endeavour on the part of all members is urged to retain and, if possible, to increase the number,” Mr. Wilding said. He regretted to report the death during the season of three club stalwarts —Messrs H. W. Crawford, G. Marshall and J. A. Finlayson.
Remarkable Record. The club had a remarkable, if not a record season, so far as inter-club trophies were concerned and holds the four cups for open competition within the North Auckland Bowling Association’s jurisdiction—the Harvey Cup, Hayes Cup, Swann Cup and the White Cup. The North Auckland Singles Championship had also been won for the Club by Mr. E. Woledge. Singles champion of the club was Mr E. Woledge; the champion rink comprised Messrs Penk, Rumble, Lambess, Marwick (skip), and the junior champion was Mr F. Jones.
