. Between 8.30 a.m. and 5.15 p.m. yesterday, 228 tons of newsprint were unloaded from a special cargo vessel at Port Whangarei, and the ship was ready to proceed to sea again. It was a magnificent feat, demonstrating the possibilities of the port and the co-operative effort of the Whangarei. Harbour Board officials, wharf labourers and cartage contractors. Of the 762 reels discharged, 737 were for the Northern Publishing Company, representing a weight equivalent of 220 tons. Twenty-five reels, weighing eight tons, were unloaded for Bargaville—the first time that goods have b£en shipped for Dargaville via Whangarei.
The cargo was taken direct from the ship's holds to motor lorries and stored on the premises of the Northern Publishing Company. Company’s Thanks Cartage and storage were handled by Messrs Hardie Bros., employing 10 men at the store and seven motor lorries. The management of the Northern Publishing Company today spoke in particularly glowing terms of the speed and efficiency of all concerned with the unshipping of cargo. It demonstrated, they said, that the port had the facilities for handling heavy cargoes. They thanked the Whangarei Harbour Board for having made the facilities available, Messrs Hardie Bros, for the efficient cartage and storage of the paper, and the wharf labourers concerned, for their willing and effective co-operation. Although carrying a heavy cargo and encountering a strong head wind, the vessel came to her moorings without difficulty, having a clearance in the channel of more than 7ft under her keel and more than 100 ft. in width. The achievement of berthing the iargest vessel to visit the Port of Whangarei, without difficulty, again illustrated the value of the shipping facilities.
