No More Beer For Auckland Hospital Patients

[Special to “Northern Advocate.”] AUCKLAND, This Day. J£EER WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE FOR CONSUMPTION AT THE AUCKLAND HOSPITAL. The chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr. Allan J. Moody) said last night that the time had come when ''this ft-ee hotel must cease.” The board decided to discontinue the use of beer at the institution, but the ban does not extend to the military annexe, and there will be no interference with the prescription of such stimulant as brandy.

Bar Question Worries Chairman. “I am not a wowser, but this question of beer consumption at the hospital has given me concern,” said Mr Moody. A few years ago as many as 890 bottles of ale and stout were used in a. month. “As a result of the stand taken by this board, the figure was reduced to 143 bottles, but last month it rose again to 418, and in the past two weeks over 300 bottles have been used. Where Are the Empties? “The strange part is that last month 93 empty bottles were not returned. “The time has come when this free hotel must cease.” Mr J. H. Kinnear claimed that Sydney hospitals used as much, beer in two years as the Auckland Hospital used In a single month. More beer was handed out than could be accounted for. Mrs M. M. Dreaver said the doctors were responsible. They prescribed it.

An amendment that the executive should investigate the position and report to the board was lost, and the motion to stop supplying beer was carried. Prohibition Institution Here. “Tills is a prohibition establishment,’’ said the secretary of the Whangarei Hospital Board (Mr J. H. Marwick), when communicated with this morning. “Only in cases where beer is prescribed by the medical superintendent is it furnished to patients, and this is very rarely indeed. “Total consumption among patients would not amount to a dozen bottles a month. “Last year, total disbursements for all kinds of stimulants and liquids was £25/10/-. v Of this at least three-quarters was spent on soda-water, which is freely used in hospital treatment.''
