Japs Raid Chungking, Heavy Deathroll
(Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 27. A message from Chungking says the Japanese raided this district for the second successive day. Sixty persons were killed and 150 wounded. Simultaneously, 98 planes bombed three points west of Chungking. Foreign sources estimate that 250 were killed in yesterday’s raid. The Japanese offensive in the Kwang-tung Province, begun on May 22. is reaching its maximum in the Tsungfa sector with a drive from Liangkow, which the Japanese captured bn May 23,.,5ays the Hongkong correspondent'of the “New York Times.” At present, however, the Japanese forces are meeting entrenched Chinese. Other Thrusts Meanwhile, 5000 Japanese"along the Canton-Hankow railway are engaged in a thrust from Sunkai to Pakong, while 7000 in Tsengshing, north of the East River, are thrusting north to support the Liangkow offensive. In Sheklung, on the Canton-Kowloon railway, 5000 Japanese are reported to be preparing to. advance on Waishow along the East River, Jt is believed the attacks are intended to split up and confuse the defence, but General Yuhanmou was forewarned and has troops at all threatened points. The Chinese claim that already there have been 3000 Japanese casualties.
