No Political Truce, Says Mr. Armstrong

AUCKLAND, This Day. : “There is no political truce of any [kind,” declared the Minister for \Health and Housing (Mr Armstrong* [at a political meeting last night, when ihe was asked if a truce existed between the Government and national [parties in connection with the Auckland West by-election. ‘ Mr Armstrong said that the Government expected every member of \ Parliament, including the Opposition [members, to co-operate in rcspcetV to .the country’s war effort. ’ “We had a right to expect that, and [the members are assisting to the best of their ability,” he added. Can Do What They Like ■ "As far as the by-election is concerned, howev’er, the question has , never been discussed between the Government and the Opposition. 1 “The Government can do what ft likes, and so can the Opposition. “I do not know what chance the Opposition would have of winning the seat, but it had a perfect right to put up a candidate. “The Government has a duty to contest the election and to invite anybody to speak.”
