“Actual Warfare” Training For Special Force
WELLINGTON, This Day
The men of the special force will now get right into the nearest type of training to actual warfare that is obtainable, as it is now known that they will serve abroad.
Two thousand of them—starting on Sunday—the 19th Wellington (Rifle) battalion from Trentham, engineers from Ngaruawahia and divisional cavalry from Auckland, will encamp at Waiouru 22 miles from Taihape. There, in an area of between 50,000 to 80,000 acres and extending 24 miles in an altitude up to 3000 feet, they will manoeuvre as a complete unit. Slopes of Mt. Ruapehu. The camp is on the lower slopes of Mt, Ruapehu, and the huge area is undulating tussock land, ideal for training all arms of the service. Not only will the fighting units be tested, but the supporting units, such as provisioning and cooking, will have a chance to try their hand at service conditions.
Field cookery will be required on a number of days. There is camp accommodation for 2000 men at the camp. The mess rooms, cookhouses -and services are permanent structures.
