Dry Canteens Are Profitable
[SjJecial to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
The first profit from the dry canteens—£looo—in the camps where members of the Special Military Force are being trained has now been divided among the regimental funds of the troops at Papakura, Ngaruawahia, Trentham and Burnham. This distribution apparently does not exhaust the profit received from the canteens by the Canteen Board set up recently by the Government to exercise general supervision over both wet and dry sections. Although the canteens are under the direction control of the Marketing Department, an important function of the board will be the decision how to divide profits. The turnover at the canteens at both Ngaruawahia and Papakura has been very substantial.
The receipts at Ngaruawahia in the first month before some of the troops shifted to Papakura was estimated at over £IO,OOO. This was partly accounted for by the fact that many soldiers were supplementing camp diet, to which they were not accustomed, with extra food from the canteens.
