Gisborne Visits Northland
[Special to “Northern Advocate.”! RUSSELL, This Day.
| “Well, we like Northland very much indeed, and Whangarei seems a prosperous town. We were surprised at its size,” said Mr Arthur Owen, a Gisborne business man who has been touring the province for the first time in his life. Accompanied by Mrs Owen and Mr and Mrs P. Brady, also from Gisborne, Mr Owen has been making-a leisurely motor tour, leaving his home town just over a week ago.
All members of the party were surprised at what the Northland had to offer in the way of interest and scenic
attractions. “We had been told that it would be a waste of time coming to your part of the world, but we have enjoyed every minute of it. The Whangarei to Russell main highway may be a bit on the bendy side, but you want to travel over our roads. You people have a reasonably good surface,” continued Mr Owen. While in Russel] the party showed great interest in all things of historical interest, and also paid a visit to Otehei Lodge and the interesting workshop of Mr J. Holmes, on Urapukapuka Island, where a series of New Zealand edible and game fish are i being prepared for the Centennial Exhibition at Wellington. While the majority of the collection is all ready for packing up for delivery, quite a number of specimens j were in various stages of preparation, I and the party spent, as Mrs Owen ex- j pressed it, “one of the most interest- j ing afternoons of my life.” j The party were surprised to see the { good-looking farmlands round Whangarei. The party were surprised to see the good locking farmlands round Whangarei.
Travelling up via Wellsford, Brynderwyn and Whangarei to Russell, the party intended returning by way of Waitangi, Kerikerf, Opononi and Waipoua Forest.
“This is our first trip North,” said
Mr Owen, “but, as soon as we can. we
arc coming again.”
