Kaitaia Businessmen Make Loyal Decisions
There was an attendance of 25 at a tea arranged by the Kaitai.a Businessmen's Association, and held in Foster’s Rooms on Monday evening. After the tea a brief address was given by Mr A. G. Horsley, the president. There was a proposal, said Mr Horsley, to hold a queen carnival for the purpose of raising funds for a Centennial memorial, but in view of the situation arising from the war, they would have to leave that in abeyance for the present.
Observe the Law. They all knew the restrictions being imposed by the Government in the interests of national safety, and he would ask the members of the association to set .a good example by strict observance of any measures which may be adopted. Benzine was being rationed, and he for one would have to walk to and from business, but he would not mind that.
Those business people who made regular delivery of goods, • might be able to work in together, and in this way economise in the use of benzine. Mention was made of a hard-up social to be held at Awanui in aid of the R.S.A. funds. About 30 R.S.A. men were in active service .at Cable Bay, and it had been suggested to him that the Businessmen’s Association should assist in providing them with a radio set.
Centennial
Mr McKinnon placed a few facts with regard to the Centennial before the meeting. It should not be difficult, he said, to find the money for a rest-room and library at Kaitaia, but at present he was averse to any further steps being taken. On the motion of Mr R. Stewart, seconded by Mr Lionel Thompson, a x'esolution was passed affirming the loyal support of the businessmen of Kaitaia to their King and country, and undertaking to give all the assistance in their power in'the present crisis. The matter of assisting in providing a radio for the R.S.A. was left in the hands of the executive.
