Very Heavy Falls Of Snow Experienced In Both Islands

[Special to "Northern Advocate "] . HASTINGS, This Day. TTEAVY SNOW FELL THROUGHOUT CENTRAL HAWKE’S BAY FOR A THREE HOURS YESTERDAY MORNING. SOME OF THE OLDEST INHABITANTS OF THE DISTRICT EXPRESSED THE OPINION THAT YESTERDAY’S CONDITIONS WERE THE COLDEST FOR 30 OR 40 YEARS.

- Falls of up to seven inches were registered on the plains, and more on the foothills and ranges.

Severe snowstorms are still raging in the Ruahines and K.aiwakas, and it is possible that if there is a sudden thaw rivers generally will rise, with possible flooding.

Falmerslon North.— Snow fell on the hills south and east of Palmerston North yesterday morning, a fall of upwards of an inch being experienced between daylight and 9 o'clock. The temperature in the city at 9 o'clock yesterday morning was as low os 38 degi-ees. Dannevirke.— The third fall of snow within a fortnight occurred at Dannevirke and in the surrounding districts yesterday morning, lasting from 6.30 to 10.30 without intermission. The depth varied from three to four inches in many places, and .in some country localities falls of six and seven inches were reported. Wellington.— Snow fell on the summit of the Rimutaka Road on Sunday night and early yesterday * morning. Motorists using the road were greatly inconvenienced. All the hills on the eastern side of Wellington harbour and the Hutt Valley bore .a dusting of snow yesterday, but it could only be seen through brief gaps in the clouds. Christchurch.— The heaviest snowfall in Christchurch this year began at about 8 o'clock last evening, and it was still falling at 9.30. The streets carried a mushy covering, and the river banks, gardens and grass plots throughout the city were covered to at least an inch deep. Ashburton.— Heavy snow fell on the higher levels of Ashburton county on Sunday .afternoon, there being 5J inches at Methven and six at Mt. Somers, with only a light fall in the town. There was a frost of 2U degrees at Methven yesterday morning.
