Drainage Proposal For Ruakaka Lagoon

Reporting on the Ruakaka Lagoon drainage to the Whangarei County Council at its monthly meeting yesterday, the clerk, Mr H. C. Hemphill, said that a conference had taken place last month and the course of the present outlet from the Ruakaka Creek outfall to a point opposite the Ruakaka Hall had been traversed. In the final discussion, only four settlors had expressed their willingness to enter into an agreement with the council to maintain the improvements that would result if the grant of £250 were expended. Other settlers above the lagoon had intimated that if expenditure of the grant brought any relief to their lands, they would then be prepared to join in, but they had expressed thendoubts whether any substantial bene-, fits would extend so far above the lagoon.

Contract Mooted

Mr J. Antonovich had advised the meeting that if the £250 grant was expended as generally indicated on the plan submitted by the engineer, plus the addition of an extension of approximately 15 chains further up towards the eastern end of the lagoon, he would be prepared to enter into a written contract to maintain the improvements for £25 per annum for a period of five years. With reference to the alternative proposal contained in the engineer’s plan to excavate a fresh and more direct channel through the flat land which had now been drained, Mr Ellis had stated that, as the owner, he was

not prepared to give the land required.

Suggested Arrangement,

It had been .finally decided that the whole, matter be referred to the county chairman and staff with a request that they discuss generally the position with the district engineer and ascertain whether, in the event of the council giving the desired maintenance undertaking, the department would undertake to have the work carried out.

It had also been decided that if the matter could be so arranged, the clerk should prepare and submit to the settlers concerned for signature, an agreement whereby they could undertake to maintain the improvements resulting from the expenditure of the grant money provided. The question bad not yet been, dis-cussed-with the district engineer, who was absent..

The council deferred the question until the next meeting.
