Kensington Dazzled by City

Tho afternoon was bitterly cold when the two town teams, City and Kensington, met at Jubilee Park, with a stiff southerly wind blowing diagonally up the ground. As a result, the players enjoyed themselves considerably more than the spectators, who assembled in good force.

At the top of their form. City staged a sparkling display. City won the toss and took advantage of the wind for the first half. Coming into action from the gun, they camped on Kensington’s line, where Bradley missed with a free kick from near the side-line. The first score came early, a scrum deep inside the twenty-five paving the way for a clean-passing movement which sent W. Lester, left winger, over in the corner. Bradley’s conversion was an excellent effort in view of the wind.

City did not let up, and when Payne secured from loose play on the twenty-five he sent out to Lacey, Parkes and Murray in another bright movement for the latter to touch down. Bradley missed with the kick. Play remained deep in Kensington ground, and L. Payne fired out a wild pass which was gathered in brilliantly by Fai'kes for the third try. Bradley converted once more.

With play on Kensington line, activities were concentrated on the left wing, but Pickrang heaved a long pass to the other wing. Kensington scotched the effort and returned to midfield.Kensington Settles Down., Kensington were now settling down and initiated an attack with clean handling in which Henderson, second five-eighths, shone. The forwards stormed City’s citadel, but lack of finish saw the effort break down, and play returned to midfield for a lengthy spell, with both sides opening up the game and turning on good football. Finally City went away and Bradley kicked through for Pickrang, following up fast, to fall on the ball as it rolled under the posts. The same player converted with a safe kick. Half-time came shortly after.

From the kick-off Kensington made big efforts, and City was obliged to force. Both teams were going hard and both full-backs, Child for City and Franklin for Kensington, were frequently called on to save. Eventually City opened out once more and the ball went out to Parkes, who cut in beautifully to score. Lester failed to reach the posts. High-Class Movements. It was then Kensington’s turn, and McMillan cut in and was heading for the line- when tipped out by Payne after a great run, F. Hollows, City five-eighths, retired hurt.

City returned to half-way, where the whole line of backs went into action in a beautiful reverse passing bout which sent Lester across wide out. Parkes’ shot at goal fell short. Activities were confined to midfield for the rest of the game, and time was sounded with the tally still: City 24. Kensington 0. Mr E. Bowyer was referee.
