Hikurangi Falls To Portland
Playing scintillating, open football, Portland seniors gave Hikurangi its first reverse of the year in the game played at Portland. The final score was 22—0, and at half-time the home team was leading 13—0.
Hikurangi was somewhat weakened by the absence of players due to influenza, but put out a full side. In the course of the game the side was further weakened by injuries.
Hikurangi won the toss and elected to play against the wind for the first
spell, This gave Portland an immediate advantage, and it proceeded to rattle on the points. T. Wallbank scored two tries, and J. Eru, T. Pitman; T. Tito and W. Paki each scored one, while H. Pirihi found the posts with two conversions. For Hikurangi F. O’Callaghan was perhaps the best forward, While in the backs Stringfellow, wing, and H. Hamilton, centre, played their usual good games. Raisbeck did not achieve as much success as usual at half-back, and was transferred to five-eighth. Lucas, who took his place''behind the scrum, was getting the ball away better, but on the day Hikurangi was outclassed.
Flesher and Wallbank starred in Portland’s rearguard. Referee was Mr J. Hill.
