Young Farmers Meet In Far North

A meeting of the Kaitaia Young Farmers’ Club was held on Monday, when it was decided to hold the annual meeting on Wednesday, March 22, and the April meeting to be held on April 13, this meeting being a combined meeting of Herekino, Oruru and Kaitaia Young Farmers’ Clubs.

Members discussed the winter tour cf the Northern Young Farmers' Clubs to the South Auckland and Bay of Plenty districts, and the Young Farmers’ rally at Ruakura, Mr E, B. Glanville, instructor in agriculture, gave an interesting address on the consolidated sand areas, using lantern slides showing how these areas can be brought in and made to grow first class pastui’e. This type of country is found in a belt about half a mile from the sea along the west coast of the Northern Peninsular. The top layer of this type of land consists of a foot to 18 inches of a dark sandy loam, the subsoil being a deep sandy loam. This land when properly sown down in good pasture and properly managed. produce 170 to 2Colbs. of butterfat to the acre. Mr Glanville stressed the benefits of using the roller when laying down pasture on any country where this can be done. The land should be rolled on the farrow, then worked up with discs and harrows, rolled again, the grass seed sown and rolled again, he said.
