High Seas And Fog On Northland Coast
Fog and high seas combined to make the Anniversary Day week-end an unpleasant one for Whangarei pleasure cruisers. Putting out from Ngunguru to the Poor Knights, Mr. A. Wilkinson’s Condette ran into a heavy fog. Both the mainland and islands were blanketed, and for several hours it was necessary for fhe launch to lie at anchor. During this time a whale passed close by and a number of .jharks were caught. While fishing, one of the party, Mr. Keith Howes, lost his footing and fell overboard. As he was being pulled in a large fin was seen in the water near the boat. Taurikura Bay, usually a sheltered spot, was the scene of a minature cyclone on Sunday night. Three launches, owned by Messrs W. Reynolds, S. Guest and Weston Bros, received a severe buffeting, those aboard spending an anxious and sleepless night. Heavy waves broke in the bay, the weather being described by one of those concerned as the roughest he had experienced in the harbour in 20 years, A heavy wind lashed the sea into :.pume and reached cottages on the coast. ’ Yesterday, again, a sea was kicked up by a high wind. One large launch was endangered when it dragged from its moorings and drifted near the rocks. Another boat lost its anchor. ~
