Water Supply Plans For Russell
By special arrangement with the Town Board, Mr S. Gilberd, water diviner and well-sinker, visited Russell on January 27 to investigate the possibilities of a water supply for the town.
Accompanied by the Town Board chairman, Mr W. Cowper Anderson, Mr Gilberd made a survey of ail likely spots suitable for boring and obtaining good and permanent water. At a special meeting of the Town Board; he gave his report the same evening. > . Several Groups Recommended. Mr Gilberd was of the opinion that the sinking of one bore, feeding the town with a large main, would be a great mistake. He suggested the selection of suitable sites round the township, and the sinking of several bores, each connected with the other, and each supplying groups to householders. Electric Pumps For Pressure.
Pressure would be obtained by installing electrically-driven pumps of the latest design at each bore.
That was, of course, looking into the future, but the advantage of the scheme was that groups of householders could immediately arrange with Mr Gilberd for the sinking of bores for their personal use, and, when electricity did arrive, they could link up with the Town Board scheme. Mr Gilberd said that, following talks he had had with various citizens, he was sure the group system would be adopted in two quarters at an early date.
Hand or engine ' driven pumps could be installed until the arrival of electricity in the near future. Insufficient Water for Camp. The Town Board members have bean very concerned' with the inadequate water supply in the Kororareka Domain Motor Camp, and, by resolution, it was decided that Mr. Gilberd be engaged *to bore for water in the Domain within the next week or so. The conditions are that the Town Board transport Mr. Gilberd and all his plant from Kerikeri to Kussell, and make an initial payment of £lO. . A Start Miide. Mr. Gilberd guarantees a supply of good water with a run of 120 gallons an hour, and, upon* justifying his claim, the board will then pay a further £35 and. transport all plant back to Paihia. A hand pump will be-fitted to the domain bore until the advent of electricity, .and it is expected that this bore will eventually supply one of the groups of householders in the vicinity. The electric pumps suggested by Mr. Gilberd will be of the most modern type, and they will. lift water well over 200 feet with full pressure.
The cost will be approximately £6O for. each pump.
