Children Return Home As Holidays End
Heavy traffic placed the Auckland: Opua express behind schedule today, and the train was about half an hour late on arrival in Whangarei this afternoon.
With large numbers of parents and children returning home in readiness for the reopening of school on Wednesday, rail services have been taxed to the utmost during the past two days.
Extra engines were required to haul both north and south-bound expresses between Auckland and Whangaref on Saturday. The south express consisted of eight cars when it left Whangarei in the morning, while there were nine carriages on the north-bound train when it pulled into Whangarei. Today’s • express left for Auckland with seven cars filled to capacity, representing a load of some 28G to 300 passengers.
