Living On Launch Free Of Charge

The owner of a fishing boat berthed at the,Town Wharf Basin had discontinued fishing and was now living on his craft without paying wharfage charges, stated Mr R. H. Allan yesterday. The matter came under consideration at the monthly meeting ■of the Whangaref Harbour Board, when wharfage charges for small boats were being discussed. • There was a special jetty for fishing craft, said Mr Allan, and most of the boats utilising the facility were on the move continually. Boat is His Home. In this case, however, the owner was no longer fishing and was making his boat his home. “Before long the board will have to Improve the waterfront between the Town Wharf and Victoria Bridge,” said the engineer, Mr W. M. Fraser. .“No permanent tenancy for berthing space can be let for that locality.” Uniform Charge Fixed. An application was received from Mr A. Walker for berthage for his launch adjacent to the Town Wharf, and, on the motion of Mr R. H. Allan, it was agreed to permit the use of the space for £1 per quarter, the board retaining the right to discontinue the concession after one month’s notice.

This is to be the basis for any other applications for berthing under similar conditions.
