Defeating the 1935 Auckland champion, Miss Nessie Beverley, decisively. Miss E. Plummer, formerly of Hawke’s Bay, but now of Wellington, entered the final of the women’s singles.
She will meet Miss Margaret Beverley, 1937 and 1938 champion. Miss Plummer’s victory was in the nature of a surprise, but she played excellent tennis, and won 6—3, 6 —3.
Miss Margaret Beverley was well pushed by Miss B. L. Bishop in the first set of the other semi-final, but tightened up her game to win 7—5, 6—l.
Bedford and Gunn started well in their doubles, hnd, despite some clever volleying at the net by both of their opponents, Mitchell and Lusk, ran quickly to a 4—l lead.
Their courtcraft was too cunning in the fifth, both Lusk and Mitchell being caught 1 Well out of position several times. High lobbing brought points to Lusk and his partner in the sixth, and twice they had the advantage, but Gunn and Bedford kept up the pressure to take the game and set, 6—l. Boys’ Competitions. Matches were also commenced in the intermediate boys’ doubles, and there were second-round matches in the intermediate ■ boys’ singles, in which W. T. Pountney beat his opponents. The title-holder in this section last year was B. Matuschka, who is not playing in the section this year because of his age. The second-round matches in the girls’ intermediate doubles were also played* the title-holder, Miss M. Beverley, of Matamata, disposing of her opponent, Miss C. Endean, in straight sets. Then followed second-round matches in the boys’ and girls’ junior singles, intermediate girls’ doubles and intermediate mixed doubles, before the main senior events of the day commenced at 12.30 o’clock. Several Northland Successes.

Roach, 6—2, 6—l; K. Crawford and B. Leech beat W. J. Grote and R. McMillan, 7—5, 3—6, 6—3. Intermediate girls’ singles.—Second round: Miss W. Smith beat Miss M. J. Robinson, 6 —2. 6—3. Men’s doubles, semifinal: Gunn and Bedford beat Lusk and Mitchell, 6—l, 6—2, 6—3. Women’s singles, semi-finals; Miss M. Beverley beat Miss Bishop, 7—5, 6 —l; Miss Plummer beat Miss N. Beverley, 6 —3, 6—3.
