Worried Importers Return From Trek
AUCKLAND, This Day,
As they stepped off the Limited express this morning their faces would have provided excellent subjects for a student of physiogmony. Oh some the expressions were grim and set, while on others was the harassed appearance of the man who is worried and does not know what to do about it. The majority were comparatively young, and they looked merely like a group of young men wlw had been away together—a break in the routine. They were already learning to be philosophical, and some were cheerful in appreciation of the finer points of the game. “Wholly Unsatisfactory.” They were the Auckland delegation of importers who had been attending the conference with the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, at Wellington, and impression of that conference was varied. , Some regarded it as having accomplished nothing. Some found in it minor grounds for satisfaction and others were faintly hopeful. ' It was considered by many who were .approached that it was wholly unsatisfactory. Mr J. A. C. Allum, who, in addition to being an importer, is also DeputyMayor of Auckland, was hurrying to a taxi when he was stopped by an interviewer. He summed up his opinion of the conference in one phrase. Mr Nash as Satician. “A masterly exhibition of leaving us exactly where we were.” Tlie word “masterly” was used by several in referring lo the way in which Mr Nash had handled the situation, but in each case it seemed to ■ express admiration for the technical skill of an opponent rather than for the actual methods used. 1
