Carriers Must Serve Public Interests
Carriers with general goods licenses as well as Public Works Department authorities will have to ensure that the general license is being fully utilised.
Presiding at the meeting of the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority in Whangarei today, Mr. E. J. Phelan declared that the time was coming when general licenses and P.W.D, licenses would have to bo separated. “There have been complaints that the Railway Department, is short; of trucks.” he said. “This has been brought about by carriers not unloading trucks ns soon as possible. Instead they have been working for the Public Works. Public Must Be Served “We issue licenses for general goods and find carriers away on public works undertakings. N “If you can do public works jobs as well as general carrying, there is no need for general carrying licenses. “Tire interests of the public must be protected.” Dealing with a particular application, Mr. Phelan said that the . policy today was to grant licenses that could be transferred from one district |to another. This would be for the convenience of the P.W.D.
The tendency, he said, was for larger districts.
