New Goods Service For Taurikura

Three individual carriers will take the place of the Manaia Transport Company which formerly operated on the Whangarel-Parua Bay-Taurikura run. At today's meeting of the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, permission was granted Messrs. Hutchinson Brothers, C. R. Powell and W. J. Friedrich to run this route. They will take the place of the Manaia Transport Company. A r further application by Robinson Brothers, Taurikura, was unsuccessful.

No Carrier in District

Mr. A, C. Lamb, who appeared for applicants, contended that it was desirable to have a carrier in the actual locality. Residents of Taurikura and district had been dissatisfied with the service they had received in the past and had petitioned, for Robinson Brothers to be permitted to carry general goods, Messrs. E. Harrison, L. A. Johnson and C. Waymouth, representing the successful applicants and the Carriers’ Association, objected to the application.

They contended that, as the new arrangement would mean an entire change in responsibility for carrying goods on this run, another license was not warranted.

They maintained that Parua Bay was the natural centre from which to conduct operations in this district and, accordingly, did not see cause) for Robinsons’ application being granted. Change in Name Only In answer to this, Mr. Lamb said that the company had been a company in name only and that the new arrangement amounted only to a change in that name. He brought witnesses to show the advisability and convenience of having a carrier actually in the district.

The Authority, in declining the application, stated that he considered the district would be served sufficiently with the three new licenses. If the holders of those did not prove efficient, he would have no hesitation in granting permission to a new operator to commence. Mr. Phelan mentioned, in general, that any operator who dropped one trip was liable to have his license revoked. It was not necessary too cease operations altogether. One trip out of schedule was all that, was required to bring this about. j

The Whangarei Pipe Band, which has been coming into prominence recently, is to be invited to load the grand parade at the Whangarei Show at Kensington on March 111. Decision to this effect was made at a show committee meeting last evening.
