Support Urged For Internal Loan
[Per Press Association. Copyright.'} WELLINGTON, This Day,
“The Minister of Finance has announced that £14.000.000 will be required on loan for railway and housing purposes, and no doubt 1m will be coming on Ihe market in the near future,” said Mr Andrew Hamilton, chairman of the Wellington Stock Exchange at the annual meeting on Thursday. “It is your duty, whether you agree with the politics of the Government or not, to give every measure of assistance to persuade your clients that we must all help to clear our debts. “At the same time. I am sure you would wish a little more of this loan money was being used to fellow the example of Australia in extended- defence measures, and not so much for expansion of our already non-paying railways. Much of the money which has been spent during the last few years in increasing the number of Public Works employees might pore profitably have been paid - out in the form of subsidy for farm labour, so that this further money which is to be raised would have enabled New Zealand to join in with the Mother Country in defence preparations."
