Northland's Participation Meeting, Thursday

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

The committee sot up by a conference of local bodies last October to consider matters concerning Centennial celebrations in Northland will a full report to the conference at Kaikche on Thursday, September 1.

The committee arranged for the taking of a moving him of the scenic attractions, landscapes and seascapes, primary and secondary industries, educational facilities, sporting pastimes. methods of transport and living conditions of the people of Northland.

Some 5000 feet of film, in addition to 300 still pictures, were taken, and though weather conditions were unsatisfactory for a considerable portion of the time that the field work was in progress, the photographic work is remarkably clear, bright and sharp. Tire film was returned to New Zealand in the Maunganui on Sunday from Australia, where it had been sent for special laboratory work before screening.

In the first “run through” at Auckland yesterday, the producers. Messrs Eppics Ltd., report that {he reproduction was first class and much better than they had expected it to be.

Between 4000 and 4500 feet of this film will be screened at the Regent Theatre, Kaikohe. starting at 11 o’clock on Thursday morning, September 1.

After the screening of the film the committee will present its report, which will include various recommendations dealing with the whole question of Centenary celebration in a comprehensive manner. Amongst the recommendations will be a suggestion that Northland, as a provincial area, should participate in the Centennial Exhibition at Wellington, that some event or events in its early history should be commemorated as a matter of provincial interest, and that local and district happenings of importance should be commemorated.

The committee recommends fullest co-operation and co-ordination with the Auckland Provincial Centennial organisation and through it with Centennial headquarters in Wellington in order that dates may not clash and that Government requests for Government subsidies may be approved.

The conference promises to be very well attended. Representative; of local bodies, chambers oi commerce, A. and P. societies, the Farmers’ Union. Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, Women’s Institute, school committees and numerous other organisations throughout the province have been invited to attend the conference, and many of them have already stated that they will be present to take part in forming the decisions and arranging to celebrate the Centenary in a fitting manner. Besides representatives from all parts of Northland. Messrs Fletcher, representing the Centennial Exhibition Company in Wellington, J. W. Heenan, Under-Secre-tary .of Internal Affairs and executive officer of the New Zealand Centennial, A. W. Mulligan, general secretary oi the Centennial branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, and K. L. Usinar. one of the joint permanent secretaries of the Auckland Provincial Centennial Organisation, will all be present.
