Training Of Youths
[Per Press Association. Copyright.] WELLINGTON, This Day. In the Legislative Council yesterday, replying to the Hon. V. Ward, who asked if some scheme of training could be devised to make useful citizens of young men who had been prevented from learning trades because of the depression, the Leader of the Council, the Hon. M. Fagan, said a campaign for absorption of youths in industry had been launched a year ago, and 217 had been placed in permanent positions in the Wellington district alone. In addition, arrangements were in train to place 200 young men in a course of vocational and physical training, a scheme was being organised by the Education Department and Defence Department in collaboration with the Labour Department and would be put into operation in a week or two. The scheme would offer an opportunity for young men to learn a useful occupation and enter industry in good physical health.
