Auckland Provincial Centennial Plans
[Special to Northern Advocate ”J AUCKLAND, This Day. A largely attended meeting of the Metropolitan Executive of the Auckland 'Prqvin, cial CJefftennial Council was held fn the City Council Chambers last night.
The chairman presented a compre- | hensive report setting out the tentative date schedules covering the period over which it was suggested the Auckland metropolitan area should celebrate the Centennial, together with a draft programme of the events suitable for the period and suggestions for appropriate permanent Centennial memorials. Appeal for £30,000. It is proposed that an appeal should be made to the Auckland public for donations to a fund of £30,000, to enable the executive to put its plans into operation. The proposed dates and events will be submitted to the National Centennial Committee, which will determine a properly co-ordin-ated programme of celebrations for the Dominion, and define which of the celebrations will be invested with national status.
The launching of the campaign to raise £30,000 for carrying out the projected celebrations was proposed by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis. This sum, with the anticipated Government subsidy of £1 for every £3 raised, would give the executive a total of £40,000. The hands of the subcommittees would be tied until they knew the precise amount of their allocation. An Intensive Campaign. Sir Ernest said that his idea was that the campaign should be an intensive one, beginning on September 1 next.
A special sub-committee to deal with the appeal was appointed. The Mayor also submitted a tentative schedule of dates covering the periods over which the Auckland metropolitan area should celebrate the Centennial. A list of projected programme was also presented by the Mayor.
