A Chinese Offensive; Japs Reported to have Had 4000 Killed
i Received 3 p.m.) LONDON. August 8. ITNCGNFIRMEB REPORTS IN SHANGHAI STATE THAT 4000 JAPANESE WERE KILLED IN A CHINESE ATTACK AT SUSUNG, IN AN ENDEAVOUR TO SWING DECISIVELY THE YANGTSE CAMPAIGN ON THE NORTHERN BANKS.
Chinese launched a general offensive on the northern bank of the Yangtze, states a Hankow message. It is claimed they are steadily pressing the Japanese back.
In an air raid on Canton, 150 were killed and 200 wounded. Of those numbers 50 were killed and many wounded outside the French cathedral when Japanese aircraft bombed Government offices, power stations and bridges. It was the severest at tack for weeks.
Japanese aeroplanes bombed the Manchang railway station, warehouses and munition dumps, and naval aeroplanes destroyed two Chinese munition ships on the Yangtse River, blew up three minelayers, and destroyers 15 grounded aeroplanes at Hankow, says a message from Tokio.
Reports from Shanghai state that Chinese guerilla troops, taking advantage of the withdrawal of Japanese troops to Manchukuo. launched a widespread offensive in North China, where the Japanese claim to have defeated them west of the Fenchen Railway, killing 1000. The Chinese say they killed 1500 Japanese before evacuating Haiyen. It is officially announced from the Chinese headquarters at Hankow that Chinese aeroplanes and artillery destroyed seven Japanese warships in the Yangtse. It is further stated that in the Japanese air raid on Nanchang, 87 persons were killed and 63 wounded. The flood situation in Hwang-mei is growing worse, and civilians are evacuating 1160 square miles. The mobilisation of 2,000,000 men and 200,000 officers has commenced in the Kwangsi Province.
