Obituary Mr. J. B. Massey

An old and highly respected settler passed away at the Paparoa hospital on Sunday, in the person of Mr J. R. Massey, at the age of 71. Deceased had been in failing health for some time, ,and had been a short period in hospital. The end came suddenly.

A son of the late Mr J. Massey, a pioneer settler of Maungaturoto. Mr. J. R. Massey was born in that district. where he spent his youth, being educated at the district school. Some 45 years ago he was married to Miss Josephine Mason, a daughter of the late Mr. J. B. Mason, another of Maungaturoto's earliest settlers, and the worthy couple took up their residence at Wairere, P.aparoa, where they developed a bush farm, became successful settlers, and won widespread respect. Marked by a kindly, upright but unassuming disposition, deceased took an intelligent interest in farming interests and district affairs, being an active helper in the former Otamatea Agricultural and Pastoral Association, when shows were held at Maungaturoto, and ,a member of the Wairere School Committee.

He is survived by his widow, one son and one daughter. The interment took place at the Maungaturoto Anglican Cemetery today.
