France’s Singapore Base
PARIS. August 8. France is planning a “Singapore base” in the bay of Cam-ranh, Annam, says the newspaper “Excelsior.” It is expected that the technical examination will be completed by the autumn, after which construction will begin immediately. The proposed base is regarded as of the greatest strategic importance.
Cam-ranh is one of the strongest natural harbours in the world, and is capable of accommodating the entire French Far Eastern fleet. The base would be complementary to the British base at Singapore. At present Cam-ranh is a secondary commercial port, and serves as a submarine base, which was established in 1933. It is intended to build strong fortifications in the hills surrounding the bay. It is also hoped that the development of the port will assist in the industrialisation of Indo-China.
Cam-ranh harbour is a large indentation on the east coast of Annam, about 800 miles north-north-east of Singapore and some 250 miles up the coast of French Indo-China from the port of Saigon. It is about 1200 miles west of the Philippine Islands, and lies on the route between Singapore and Hongkong. There is a coastal railway to Saigon.
