Diggers of Vine Street. It was not the lure of precious yellow metal which led to extensive excavations in Vine Street yesterday, but merely, as implied by consequent questionable odours, the efforts of borough council workmen to deal with a blockage in the main sewer.

Jeffrey, owner-captain of the South African yacht Land’s End, which berthed at the town wharf this morning in the course of a world cruise. Jeffrey’s South African yacht, Land’s End, now in Whangarei, would be complete without reference to the ship’s mascot, Peter, the cat, who is one of the members of the original crew from Durban. Captain Jeffrey said this morning that Peter is the only member of the crew to get fresh fish. In the Trades, when small flying-fish come over the low rails and fall to the deck, they are fair game for Peter, but he is the only fortunate one in this respect. ♦ ♦ Film of World Cruise, In the course of his world cruise, Captain H. Jeffery, owner-captain of the South African yacht Land’s End, which arrived in Whangarei this morning, is keeping a record of his travels by means of a cinematographic film.
