Warrants Of Car Fitness: New Scheme

In making his announcement yesterday that after March 31, 1939, city! municipal authorities which have the I necessary facilities to do all inspection j work will be made the sole examining I authorities for the issue of warrants : of fitness for motor-vehicles, the Min- j ister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, said that at the inception of the scheme an understanding was given to garages that the authority granted them was for two years only. It was anticipated that city authorities would then be in a position to execute a large portion of the inspection work. “Although for this purpose a cityis defined as one having a population of 20,000 or over, I shall be pleased to extend this policy to a municipality where the number of vehicles registered in its area exceeds 4000,” said 1 the Minister, He added that he would revoke the warrants of appointment of all garages where the work of inspection would be carried out by municipalities after March 31. The garages which would be pormitI ted to carry on as at present would | do so on the understanding that their authorities may be revoked at any time should. Hint be considered desirable in the public interest, Mr Semple concluded th'at the task of examining 200,000 vehicles twice annually was not an easy one, and he expressed appreciation of the work done by garages ’and also of the cooperation he h'ad received from the public in making the roads safer.
