i From all appearances Ihe programme to be presented at the forthcoming boxj ing tournament of the Whangarei As'socialion will be the best staged locnllv ‘ for many years. There will be 18 amateur bouts, boys coming from Hamilton. Auckland, Davgaville, Awanui to match themselves with the best of local talent. Perhaps the star attraction will be the tight between Ken Moran <Dargaville) and Mel Painter <Whangarei). Moran has a great record, being Auckland provincial and New Zealand champion and Empire Barnes representative. He is a rugged two handed fighter and keeps at it from gong to gong. He carries a punch in either hand and is a great crowd pleaser. He is the best amateur seen in Whangarei for years. Mel Painter, needs no introduction to the Whangarei public. He also, has a great record, being lightweight champion of Northland for five years and finalist in the New Zealand championships at Blenheim four years ago He has now stepped up into the welter weight class, and those who saw him fighting at Dargaville last Saturday, regard him as the most rugged in this class in New Zealand. Tire tournament will be held at the Whangarei Town Hall on Saturday next July 30.
