Britain Badly Behind In Shipbuilding Race

(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 20. Statistical tables in the new volume of Lloyd’s Register, show a development unfavourable to British countries since 1914. The total shipping owned in the world increased by 21.466.000 tons, or 47.3 per cent., whereas British countries have risen only 195,000 tons, or 1 per cent. Shipping owned by Great Britain and Ireland has actually fallen by 1.217.000 tons, but this is offset by an increase of 1,412,000 tons owned by British Dominions. The number of ships in the world increased by 4965, but Great Britain and Ireland’s declined by 1744. The Dominion’s number increased by 682, making the net British reduction 1062, whereas Japan’s increase is 1084.
