The Navy Ashore

During the visit of H.M.S. Leander to Russell, very few of the ratings came ashore until Saturday afternoon, when a large number arrived to take part in different athletic games. The reason for keeping to the cruiser was given by one of the officers, who explained that anticipating an Island cruise the men had spent to the limit and consequently were all "broke," to use the officer's own term, when the Leander arrived in the Bay. However, on Saturday afternoon a harrier party of about thirty men arrived for a strenuous run over the hills round the town, and several football teams, Rugby and Soccer, spread themselves over the Kororareka Domain playing area, and enjoyed solid practice. A large number of golf enthusiasts visited the Russell Golf Club's links on the historic Waitangi Estate on Saturday and Sunday.
