Mounted Rifles At Maungatapere
A large amount of useful work was done at Maungatapcre on Monday when members of the Maungatapere Troop of the N.A.M.R. held an all-day parade. Through the courtesy of Mr C. E. Foote, the parade was held on -he golf course. Considerable keenness was r ' by the men, who attended fror.i points as far distant as Hikurangi, Otonga and Kamo, as well as from Tangiteroria, the ranks including part of the Mounted Rifles troop and part of the Mechanised Transport Force. Under the direction of Lieut. H. C. Hewlett, with the assistance of Staff Sergeant-Major G. C. Andrews, D.C.M., a full programme of training was dealt with, including indication and recognition of targets, the annual tost of judging distances and the annual course of weapon training with rifles and Hotchkiss guns. Map-reading and exorcises in the use of the compass were also taken. in addition to revolver-firing. Camp al Maryjonul. Next week-end, on July 23 and 24, it is anticipated that 30 men will take part in a camp at Mangonui, when as well as the Maungatapere Mounted Rifles, others will be present from Awanui, Kaitaia, Peria, Waimate North, Okaihau and Kerfkeri. Those men from Awanui will be members of a section of Mechanised Transport, those from Kaitaia will be infantry troops, while all others will be Mounted men. Troops will be accommodated at McKay’s Hall.
