Tho strength of the New Zealand police has been increased by 47, and further advances in equipment and facilities of all kinds in the past, year are recorded by the Commissioner, Mr D. J. Comings, in his annual report presented to Parliament. At March 31 the total permanent strength was 1239 of all ranks, and there were in addition 189 temporary constables, mostly appointed on probation. The cost of the force per head of population for the year 1937-33 was 7/6, compared with 6/3 in the preceding year and 5/94 hr 1935-36. There was one officer to every 1123 persons, a considerably lower proportion than in any state of Australia. New stations were established during the year at Kaec, National Park, Bruce Bay, in South Westland, and Kopuawhara. on the West Coast railway. The station at Whangaroa was closed, the new Kaeo station replacing it.
