New Northern Highway Declared
Information that the District Highways Council had agreed to recommend the declaration of the PakarakaSpringbank Road via Bull’s Road as a main highway was received from the Main Highways Board at the monthly meeting of the Bay of Islands County Council on Thursday. It was stated that the matter would receive the consideration of the board at the annual review of State highways. Hospital Road Improvement.
The Kawakawa Chamber of Commerce wrote drawing the council’s attention to the unsatisfactory state of Hospital Road. It was pointed out that the narrowness of the road constituted a great danger. There had already been several narrow escapes and it required only a serious accident to bring home the gravity of the situation. In view of the volume of traffic using the road the chamber suggested that the council have the road widened and straightened to comply with the requirements of the traffic involved. The council already has the work in hand. Accepting Dedicated Roads. A resolution was passed to the effect that prior to the acceptance of dedication of any roads in Kerikeri, subject to ironstone metalling, a committee comprising the chairman (Mr H. T. Atkinson), Cr. H. T. Bates and the engineer (Mr Clifford) should submit a report on the works carried out. General Business. Cr. H. M. Cookson was appointed as the council’s representative on the Bay of Islands Park Development Association. On the motion of Cr. D. Rintoul it was agreed that the interest and sinking fund due to the Hokianga County Council under the Loan Award should be paid from the general account.
