He j had been entertaining friends at his j heme on Saturday afternoon, and, not feeling well, he res.ed on a lounge. Shortly afterwards Lady Richardson found 'ho had died.
Sir Geogrc was porn in England in November 1808. At the ago of 19 ne enlisted as a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery at Woolwich. New Zealand at that time had completed a scheme cf coas.al defence, and Sir Gecrgc was sent out to New Zealand for instructional purposes, arriving at Wellington in 1891. When his term of service expired, he was transfered to the New Zealand Staff, with the rank cf captain, and the title of Director of Artillery. Ho held this post until 11912, when ho was sent to the Staff i College, Camberly. On the outbreak of the Great War. he was appointed Chief of Staff to General Paris, commanding the force of 250,000 men of the Royal Naval Division. Sir George also took part in the lading at Cape Helles, and served there until the evacuation. In i 923 he was appointed Administrator of the Mandated Territory of Western Samoa, in succession to Colonel R. W. Tate, who was appointed a magistrate, coming to Whangarei. Sir George was knighted in 1925, and retired and returned to New Zealand in 1928. At the time of his death. Sir George was Deputy Mayor of Auckland.
