'Karamea Give Hikurangi Hard Fight
Hikurangi were fortunate in not having to lower their colours before Maungakaramea at Hikurangi. the game ending in a win for the home team by Jf points to six. 'Karamea played exceptionally well, and on several occasions, it was only lack of sustained, combination that kept them from scoring. A number of casualties broke up Hikurangi’s arrangement, three of their men. Booth. Mclnnes and Sanft having to be assisted from the field. A 'Karamea forward, Cooper, was also obliged to leave the field with an injury. The game opened in mild fashion, neither team being able to master the greasy ball with any spec-’ In the first 10 minutes Codling, Hikurangi’s half-back battled his way through the ’Karamea forwards to allow Mclnnes to carry the ball over for the first try, which B. Martin converted. Shortly afterwards Kelk opened the way for Hopi, a fellow ’Karamea forward. to take possession and leave Hikurangi standing while he secured an easy try. M. Morresey’s attempt at conversion failed. There was no alteration in the score at half-time. The second spell was marred by interruption for injuries, and neither side was able to get properly started. Hikurangi’s forwards bid fair to score se-eral times, but the ’Karamea resistance held, and play wenr up find down-field with 50-50 favouritism. A smart piece of work by Codling saw the ball go to J. Pomfrett, to B. Martin, who scored too far out for his kick to succeed. Further points came to Hikurangi, from a beautiful penalty kick by B. Martin, followed a few minutes later by a kick for ’Karamea taken by M. Morresey. The game ended with ’Karamea pushing hard on the home team’s line, Mr J. Beasley controlled the game.
