TACKLING EUPATORUUM MENACE
Steps are being taken by the Department of Agriculture. Whangarei. *o eradicate the Mexican devil weed.
This has been the subject of repeated deputations and complaints to local authorities, the North Auckland Forest Society being particularly anxious that it should not obtain a grip in Northland.
Eupatorium glumdulosum has par-1 ticularly affected pastures that are j going back to scrub. So far. the seed lias apparently had no opportunity to germinate on first-class land. Experiments by the Department are being carried out on weed-infested country at Tahere, with the object of discovering the best method of eradicating the plant. On four of eight experimental plots the weed has been cut, and on the others, it remains standing. Sodium chlorate has been sprayed on some plots and others were dusted, while sodium chlorate and , lime treatment also are being tried. * As yet it is too early to say whether or not the treatment will bo effective, as the experiments so far are only in their primary stages.
